Pens Name Todd Reirden New Assistant Coach

Qualifications are just one aspect of the selection process. The selection also speaks to his familiarity with the Penguins system and Coach Bylsma’s ability to have a good working relationship with the guy. It worked in WBS, we’ll see if it works here.

Opening Salvos

Great article! Thanks for your continued contributions to the blog! I continue to be impressed with what Ray Shero and Dan Bylsma are doing with this team. The addition of Tony Granato is also helping.

The Russian Nightmare: Pens 7 – ‘Canes 4

Great insights Anne! Malkin was a BEAST on Thursday night. It was one of those nights where he was totally in the game and on a mission. When he plays like that, I don’t think anyone can stop him. The Canes will be looking to take Geno off from his game tonight by playing him physically and denying him any room. The problem is, the Penguins have other lethal weapons in their arsenal. It could prove to be too much to contain. That being said, the Canes will put up their toughest fight tonight on their own ice. If the Pens win tonight, it is all over in my opinion. If not, we may finally have a series on our hands.

I like your inclusion of the Staal tracker. The truth is, Eric Staal has been a relative non-factor in this series thus far. Kudos to Jordan and the Penguins for taking any wind out of Eric’s sails.

The “Shhhh” of Death

Great analysis! This was a character come from behind win for the Penguins, and in my mind a necessary bit of adversity early in the playoffs to remind the Penguins that nothing will come easy. The Penguins will need to improve some things in round 2, but the good news is that they readily recognize that. Most in need of improvement is the powerplay. I also like your observations about the drop pass play. It is just too dangerous a play to rely on, especially when the other team knows it is coming!

Third “Line’s” a Charm

Great article ChaiWoman! This third line has really made the difference over the past few weeks and is dominating so far through 1 period in the playoffs. Opponents should fear a confident Jordan Staal.

Sidney Crosby Injured in 3-0 Loss to Tampa

Yes, pretty upsetting to see this happen. However, a little adversity can be a good thing for the team in the long haul. The team needs to pull a Conklin and turn a bad thing into a great opportunity to excel. Tonight’s game may be a good indicator on whether the team will answer the call or use the loss of Crosby as an excuse.

Winter Classic 2008 Primer!

You are right, that is the way my article reads, however I realize that “God Bless America” is not the National Anthem. I was pulling info from the NHL public releases, and assumed that the National Anthem would also be sung. However, it was just “God Bless America” in lieu of the National Anthem. Good catch, thanks!

Penguins Season Comparison at 28 Games In

The Red Wings definitely are having a great year so far. They lead the league with 42 points. I will point out that the Penguins and the Red Wings have the same record in their last 10-games (7-2-1).

Penguins December Preview

I do think they have turned the corner. 14 goals in the last 3 games, while giving up 6. Bringing Colby back and pairing him with Sid was the right thing to do in my opinion. For some reason, they play well together. Sid makes Colby a viable top line winger. Staal has also finally found his groove again. Nice to see that they didn’t come back after a long layoff and miss a period or two. Also nice to see that they can cover for Gonchar while he is out with the sore groin. Hopefully they can keep it going and build on it.

Penguins Season Performance Comparison

Let’s hope it is not a fluke and that he can shake the sophomore slump he has been in. Also good to see Colby getting some points….and Kennedy….time for the Penguins to rise up out of the cellar.

Penguins Look For 3rd Win in November

B O O M!

» Posted By Paul On November 19, 2007 @ 2:04 PM

Inbred moron? Ouch! I figured Recchi would be back in the lineup. I certainly would have put him on the 4th line if I were to play him last night, not the 2nd line. He was a bad match for Malkin. I also don’t understand how Laraque has been paired occassionally with Sid and Malkin. It only makes sense if he is sent out to put a hit on an antagonizer of the top 2 forwards, but that hasn’t been happening. It was a tough loss last night. I guess we all know where you stand on Therrien.

Penguins Host Flyers Tonight

EvilPens, I am starting to see it your way in terms of being a 1-line team. I had held the belief that we have enough talent to be more than a 1-line team, but the other players have failed to step up to their potential so far. As such, I hope to see Malkin moved back to the second line, and Staal to the 3rd. I would look at moving Talbot and Christensen up in the rotation to 1st and 2nd lines for a try.

Penguins Face the Islanders: Game Preview

I will give you this…they have been playing like a 1-line team, but the talent they have is not indicative of a 1-line team. The issue is that the other players/lines need to pick it up and play like they are the top players/top lines and stop watching the first line carry the load. I am not going to be down on Recchi now that he is playing on a lower line where he belongs. He is no longer a top 2 line player (but that is ok). All in all, Interesting note on your Ouellet/Sykora comparison…after 12-games last year, Ouellet had 10-points (5G, 5A). After 12-games this season, Sykora has 10-points (6G, 4A).
