The Pittsburgh Penguins met a much different team on Friday night than the one that showed up on Wednesday, but they came away victorious and took an ever important 2-0 series lead over the Philadelphia Flyers. It took the better part of 4 periods and two come from behind goals for the Penguins to seal the deal by a score of 3-2. In the end, it ultimately came down to poor discipline on behalf of the Flyers that lead to a minute and a half 5-on-3 sudden death powerplay opportunity for the Penguins. The game winning goal came off from the stick of Bill Guerin with just 1:31 left in the first overtime period while Mike Knuble (cross checking) and Claude Giroux (slashing) sat in the penalty box for the Flyers. The 5-on-3 opportunity for the Penguins came after they successfully killed of a minute and half of their own ...

A little over a week after the Pittsburgh Penguins signed him to a new 2-year contract, Tyler Kennedy's actions spoke volumes about the decision. Kennedy scored the first goal in the Penguins' season opener against the Ottawa Senators in Stockholm less than a minute into the game. He followed up by stripping the puck from Jason Spezza and getting the game winning goal with less than a minute to go in sudden death overtime. The goal averted a shootout and gave the Penguins a 4-3 win.

Satan may prove to be that player. Several times Sid would generate open ice for himself and then look and have no avenue to pass. Pascal needs to pick up his game if he is going to remain on that line.

The Pittsburgh Penguins battled back from a 3-1 defecit, but ultimately lost to the Tampa Bay Lightning in a shootout when #1 draft pick Steven Stamkos scored the deciding goal on Saturday night. The Lightning, under new head coach and former ESPN color analyst Barry Melrose, sat many of its veterans for the pre-season opener, including Vinny Lecavalier and Martin St Louis. Also missing from the lineup were former Penguins' Ryan Malone, Gary Roberts, Mark Recchi, and Adam Hall. Pittsburgh played many of its young stars, to include Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, Jordan Staal and Marc-Andre Fleury. They also played newcomer Miroslav Satan, ...

In a surprise development, Pittsburgh Penguins' defenseman Ryan Whitney underwent surgery on Friday to correct a left foot misalignment that he has secretly been dealing with for some time. The procedure, an osteotomy, is a surgical operation whereby bone is cut to shorten, lengthen, or change its alignment. It usually involves taking out a wedge of bone near a joint to correct the alignment and alleviate pain. The typical recovery time for a procedure like this is 3-5 months, which means (at a minimum) Ryan Whitney won't play for the Penguins until mid-November.

Paul, you did a nice job on this blog. It`s exactly the way I`m looking at it also. If Shero signs Staal this off season then noone realistically can say anything but great job! Under the salary cap, this GM will have done what most could never accomplish. He did it with discounts, call them home town or whatever, these young great players want to stay together to win championships and they`ll take less to accomplish it. This gives them the cap space for the GM to bring in the right players to make sure they have the best chance at the cup. By the way, there is definitely a realtionship between the players and the fans in the Burgh like I could have never believed. That might be the sixth reason that the Pens will be better this season than last. It just keeps getting better...

Over the past month, there has been a lot of chatter that the Pittsburgh Penguins lost their best chance at the Stanley Cup by losing to the Detroit Red Wings this past season. Assertions have been made that the Penguins gave up too much in the off-season to be competitive for the cup again in the coming season. Many have highlighted the acquisition and subsequent loss of Marian Hossa and the departure of Ryan Malone as the main points in their argument. In fact, the Penguins are poised for another phenomenal season and have a better chance of being a cup ...

As a hockey fan, one of the great things about having your team go all the way to the Stanley Cup Finals is the fact that the off-season is so short. While it hardly seems possible, the Penguins 2008-09 regular season is just 10-weeks away. That means that training camp and pre-season action is coming up just around the corner. The Penguins will be looking to defend their Eastern Conference Title and renew their push for the Stanley Cup, albeit with a slightly retooled lineup.

While there was much ado about the loss of some key players to free agency during ...

The Pittsburgh Penguins signed a 3-year deal on Friday with Coach Michel Therrien reportedly worth $1M annually. The contract, which runs through the 2010-2011 season, replaces his existing contract that would have run out in 2009 and would have paid him $750K next season. The 33% raise and 3-year term signify the organization's confidence in Therrien after he coached the very talented young team to an exceptional 94-51-19 record over the past 2 seasons.

Now that the 2008 NHL Entry Draft is behind us and the initial Free Agency activity has occurred, it is time to step back and take a closer look at the Pittsburgh Penguins 2008 draft picks. While much of the reporting focused in on Patrick Killeen and Nathan Moon, the Penguins actually acquired a total of four players through the late June draft. This included two goaltenders, a defenseman and a center, all of whom the Penguins will likely allow to develop over the next two seasons in Juniors/College. As a result of previous trades involving Marian Hossa, Hal Gil ...

The Red Wings have only gotten better in the off-season, though....
